Why We’re Bringing Beef Tallow Back to the BRICC
Old-School Ingredient. Better Bar. Same Brick Box.
Sometimes moving forward means looking back.
For generations, beef tallow was one of the workhorses of traditional soapmaking. Long before shower gels, plastic bottles, and shelves full of products promising twelve different things, soapmakers relied on simple ingredients that did their job and did it well.
Beef tallow was one of them.
And lately, we’ve been asking ourselves a pretty simple question at Brick Box:
Can we make a better BRICC?
Not a trendier one. Not a fancier one.
A better one.
For us, part of that answer has meant bringing beef tallow into more of our cold-process soap formulas.
Why Tallow?
There’s a reason soapmakers used tallow for generations.
Beef tallow contributes the kind of qualities we want in a serious bar of soap: hardness, longevity, and a dense, creamy lather.
Our BRICCs were already hard bars with rich lather. But when we began working tallow into the formula, we liked what it brought to the finished soap.
The bars felt even more substantial.
The lather became richer and creamier.
And the whole BRICC had the kind of old-school, built-to-last character that fits Brick Box perfectly.
A BRICC should feel like a BRICC.
Solid. Dependable. Built to work.
The Old Ways Got a Lot Right
We’re not using beef tallow because it suddenly became fashionable.
Tallow isn’t new.
It’s old. Really old.
And that’s part of what we like about it.
There’s something that feels right about reaching back to a traditional soapmaking ingredient and putting it to work in a modern handcrafted bar. We already make our soap using the traditional cold-process method, one batch at a time. Tallow fits naturally into that process.
No gimmick.
No reinvention of the wheel.
Just an ingredient with a long history of doing its job exceptionally well.
A Better Balance
Good soap isn’t about finding one miracle ingredient.
It’s about balance.
Beef tallow now works alongside the other oils and butters that make a Brick Box BRICC what it is. Coconut oil contributes cleansing power and bubbles. High-oleic sunflower oil helps condition and round out the bar. Shea butter brings richness. Castor oil supports the lather. Palm contributes hardness and structure.
Tallow adds something of its own to that mix — helping build an even firmer bar with the dense, creamy lather we were looking for.
We didn’t throw out the formula and start over.
We refined it.
And after working with the new blend, we think the BRICC is better for it.
Why Make the Change Now?
Brick Box has never been a finished product.
We’re always making batches, watching how they cure, seeing how they perform in the shower, listening to customers, and asking where we can make something better.
That’s part of being a small-batch soapmaker.
You get to pay attention.
You get to experiment.
And when something works better, you don’t have to wait for a corporate committee to approve it.
You make the change.
Starting with Trade Winds, beef tallow began working its way into the Brick Box lineup. As more BRICCs are made again, you’ll continue seeing tallow become part of more of our soaps.
Not because we needed another ingredient to advertise.
Because we liked what it did to the bar.

We’d rather go the other direction.
